This is a very interesting project on behalf of Network rail with various obstacles throughout the project.
The purpose of the project is reduce/eliminate health risks for the workforce within the maintenance shed due to the following:
Train vehicle exhaust fumes generated from the movement and engine testing of diesel trains currently being produced in the Servicing & Maintenance sheds are causing severe health and safety concerns to the operational staff since the components within the exhaust gasses are now classed as a
health risk.
The project proposal was to design fully automatic fresh air supply and extract ventilation system to ‘Dilute’ and also ‘Extract’ the train exhaust gases.
Sensors will be strategically located throughout the sheds to detect NOx, CO, CO2 gases and control the zonal fresh air supply and extract fans operation and speed dependent on the levels
of contamination measured automatically.
As part of the design period, CFD Modelling was undertaken to confirm workforce exposure limits (EH40/202) would be achieved.
