APPRENTICES

At Thornley & Lumb Partnership Limited, we're committed to nurturing the next generation of building services engineers right here in our local communities. Based in Bradford at our HQ or with our London office, we actively seek out talented young people from our regions who are eager to begin a rewarding career in engineering. We believe that investing in local apprentices isn't just good for our business—it's essential for the future of our industry and the communities we serve.

Our apprenticeship programme offers a comprehensive pathway into building services engineering, combining hands-on experience with structured training and professional development. From day one, apprentices work alongside our experienced engineers on real projects, gaining practical skills in mechanical, electrical, public health and building physics engineering, whilst studying towards industry-recognised qualifications. We provide dedicated mentorship and support throughout the journey, ensuring each apprentice has the guidance they need to develop both technically and professionally.

As an innovative SME, we pride ourselves on offering apprentices something larger firms often can't—genuine responsibility, varied project experience, and direct involvement in shaping sustainable building solutions. Our apprentices aren't just learning the fundamentals; they're contributing to cutting-edge projects that define the future of building services engineering. Many of our current engineers started their careers as apprentices with us, progressing to become chartered professionals and leaders within the business.

We're passionate about creating long-term engineering careers, not just filling entry-level positions. If you're looking to start your journey in building services engineering with a company that will invest in your future, we'd love to hear from you.

Meet Paul

I started at TLP in November of 2022. I decided to specialise in Electrical Engineering as I’ve always found it interesting and enjoyed learning how electrical systems are designed and integrated within buildings.

I’m almost finished completing my HNC in building services engineering with college, where I’ve been developing my technical knowledge alongside gaining practical experience at TLP.

So far, one of the most notable projects I’ve worked on is the Strand Premier Inn, where I was involved in the electrical design work. This gave me valuable experience working on a live project and understanding how electrical systems are coordinated on a larger-scale development.

Meet Harry

I have been with the company since June 2022 and have been working as part of the building physics team since then. When starting at the company I was given an insight into all 3 disciplines and given the opportunity to decide which path I was to follow. I decided Building Physics due to my interest in maths and also liked to explore the energy consumption of buildings further. As part of my time at TLP I have been given the opportunity to complete many qualifications these include my OCDEA qualification. I’m currently studying at college to complete my ONC and HNC as well as working towards my Low Carbon Energy Assessor accreditation with CIBSE. Whilst at TLP I have worked on various types of projects including Leisure Centres, Hotels and Residential Flats.

Meet Cory

I joined TLP in August 2019 following my college placement, having completed a Diploma in Sciences while studying Mechanical and Electrical Engineering. I chose to specialise in Mechanical Engineering as I find it the most challenging and rewarding discipline, particularly due to its problem-solving nature and strong focus on mathematics, which I enjoy. I have now completed college, achieving a Distinction in my HNC, along with a Commendation from the Leeds College of Building Board of Examiners for excelling above my peers during that academic year. During my time at TLP, I have worked on a variety of projects, including the recent installation of new Air Handling Units at the Science & Innovation Centre Park in Swindon—an impressive and memorable project, with the archive spaces feeling straight out of an Indiana Jones scene.
