5 – 7 Park Royal Road East and West sites

The building physics engineering works for 5 – 7 Park Royal Road were to produce a full GLA referable building physics related planning documents. The scheme is a large 33 storey mixed use scheme that includes student accommodation up to 1,000 studio apartments and ancillary facilities including classrooms, flexible space and two auditoriums, and light industrial use. In addition across the road included in the scheme is Block B comprising residential units with flexible commercial uses at ground and lower ground floor. The building physics engineering works were to calculate the energy and carbon emissions using Part L DSM building simulation software and write a compliant Energy Strategy achieving Be Lean and Be Green carbon reduction targets set out in The London Plan. The scheme also involved more detailed modelling of the student accommodation and commercials areas using the operational energy modelling CIBSE TM54 method.

The GLA and building regulations Part O also required a detailed dynamic simulation of overheating and natural ventilation for planning and Part O compliance in addition to the building safety regulator compliance for Gateway 2. The overheating calculations required dynamic simulation of natural ventilation and HVAC modelling of the MVHR lop cooling unit, replicating the controls strategy in the energy model to determine which units could still be passively cooled by natural ventilation.
